Town:

The Massif Central is a rather large area which ranges from the hilly Morvan (Bourgogne) via the volcanious areas in the Puy de Dôme and the Cantal towards the Mediterranean Sea. It is a relatively under populated and largely undeveloped area in south-central France made up of beautiful mountains, plateaus, forests and volcanoes. Classic rivers such as the Loire and the Dordogne have their spring or source here.

Biking:

Lesser know that the big names of the Alps and the Pyrenees, the Massif Central provides a huge variety of challenging and spectacular routes for road cyclists and mountain bikers. The lower altitudes such as the Morvan and the Allier open up the opportunity for cycling holidays almost all year around. The nature of the geography provides hundreds of quiet hilly circular routes to discover for all levels and ages.

In the middle mountain areas which can be found in the Puy de Dôme (Massif du Sancy, Livradois-Forez) and in the Cantal cycling is possible as of mid-May up until October. Here many of the well known climbs can be found.

Notable climbs are the Pas de Peyrol (Puy Mary) 1588m, Super-Besse 1289m, Col de la Croix Morand 1401m, Col de la Croix Saint Robert 1451m and the Col de Béal 1390m.

In 2016 the Tour de France will once again spend a couple of days in the area.

There are also great mountain bike tours possible in this area and some places even have a network of sign posted mountain bike routes like the Massif du Sancy. There is even a downhill bike park at Super-Besse.

Events:

Mid-June: La Montée de Puy de Dôme (climbing the Puy de Dôme – only open for cyclists during this event)

Early July: Les Copains – well organized cyclosportives from Ambert

August: Sancy Verte – a mountain bike event from La Bourboule

September: La Transvolcanique - Cyclosportive over twice 85 kms 2.500 to 3.500 meters of climbing from Blanzat to Le Mont-Dore and back.
